NetLibrary FAQ

Timberland Regional Library provides access to a collection of electronic books (eBooks) through a partnership with NetLibrary, producer and host to one of the largest collection of electronic books.

What is NetLibrary?

  • NetLibrary offers a comprehensive collection of online books (eBooks) and resource materials.

What are NetLibrary eBooks?

  • An eBook is an electronic version of a printed book. eBooks can be viewed online from any computer connected to the Internet.

Do I need to create a NetLibrary account to read an eBook?

  • Although you don't NEED a NetLibrary account in all cases to read an eBook, it is recommended that you create one if you plan to use eBooks.
  • You will never need a NetLibrary account to read an eBook from inside a Timberland library.
  • You do not need a NetLibrary account if you are at home and access NetLibrary from a Timberland Reference Databases menu. (The Reference Database menus require you to enter your library card number for authentication.) You do need an account to read an eBook from home if you connect directly to NetLibrary's web address Reference Databases menu.
  • If you don't have an email address, please talk with a Timberland staff member. They can show you how to set up a free email account.

How do I create a NetLibrary account?

  • If you are in a Timberland library, connect to the NetLibrary site from the menu on a Timberland computer. Otherwise connect to NetLibrary from the Reference Databases menu. When you are connected, you should see "Timberland Regional Library" and the logo on the right side of the NetLibrary screen.
  • Click on the Create a Free Account link on the upper-right corner of the screen.
  • Fill out the form to create an account. You must fill out all fields on the form. When you are finished, click the Create Account button.
  • You may be asked to create a different username if the one you entered is already in use. You may want to use your email address as your username.
  • Use this account name and password every time you log in to NetLibrary.

Does it matter where I create my NetLibrary account?

  • You must establish your account from a Timberland Regional Library computer or through Timberland's Reference Databases menu. Then NetLibrary will give access to Timberland Regional Library's eBook collection.

I want to create a NetLibrary account but I don't see "Create a Free Account" anywhere on the NetLibrary page. Now what?

  • This means that you have not been authenticated as a Timberland patron by the NetLibrary system.
  • This happens if you go directly to the NetLibrary site by clicking on a Favorite or Bookmark or by typing in NetLibrary URL. To create a free account, you must connect to NetLibrary from Timberland's Reference Databases menu. (If you already have a NetLibrary account, you can log in.)
  • This also can happen if you connect to NetLibrary from the Reference Databases menu but are blocking access to 3rd-party cookies with a software firewall such as Norton Internet Security or Zone Alarm. If you encounter this problem, you can temporarily solve it by disabling the Privacy service in your firewall. For information on configuring a software firewall to allow access to 3rd-party cookies, please see section 3 in Reference Databases Help.

Can I use NetLibrary from home or from my office?

  • Once your account is created, you may access the TRL NetLibrary collection from anywhere, including from home or office, by going directly to http://www.netlibrary.com
  • If you have not created an account, you can access NetLibrary from Timberland's Reference Databases menu.

How do I log in?

  • Click the Log In link in the upper right corner of NetLibrary.
  • Enter your username and password on the NetLibrary login screen.
  • Click on the Log In button.

Why can't I open the book when I click on a NetLibrary link in the Timberland catalog?

  • When you click on a NetLibrary link from the catalog, your browser immediately opens the NetLibrary site. You will then be able to open the ebook.

Can I download an eBook?

  • Timberland does not support downloading eBooks - you must read the book online using the View function. It is not necessary to checkout a book in order to read it online.

How do I check out an eBook?

  • It is not necessary to check out an eBook in NetLibrary. Using the View function, you can read any of the eBooks in Timberland's collection at any time.

Can I print an eBook?

  • Copyright rules are the same for eBooks as they are for print books. You can print a single page of an eBook but not the entire book.

Can I listen to audio eBooks in NetLibrary?

Who do I contact if I need more information?
